Emerging from the Great Green Wall initiative, which aims to restore 100 million hectares across the Sahel to halt Sahara’s advance, the Dakar Greenbelt studio brings large-scale restoration to Dakar and its surroundings. Rempart Popenguine, built on rigorous regional analysis and global greenbelt precedents, focuses on the small fishing town of Popenguine, whose existence is threatened by the relocation of West Africa’s largest container port. Responding to concerns raised in stakeholders’ meetings, this project proposes a gradual transition from subsistence fishing to a diversified economy grounded in marine and terrestrial stewardship, while positioning Popenguine as a pilot site, linking local efforts to the broader Great Green Wall.
